CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia baseball team received a strong start from right-hander Branden Kline (Jr., Frederick, Md.) and rallied from an early three-run deficit to top Wake Forest, 9-4, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a three-game ACC series at Davenport Field. Virginia (20-10-1, 7-6 ACC) extended its home win streak to 12 games.
Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, and the series culminates with a 7 p.m. Monday game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU as part of the network's ACC Monday package.
Kline (5-2) worked 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits and three walks while striking out eight to earn the win. Kline retired nine straight batters from the second to fifth innings and 17 of the final 19 batters he faced.
Stephen Bruno (Jr., Audubon, N.J.) and Nick Howard (Fr., Olney, Md.) each picked up three hits for Virginia, while Derek Fisher (Fr., Rexmont, Pa.) had a double, triple and three RBI. With his sixth-inning triple, Fisher tied the UVa single-season record with his eighth triple of 2012.
