Madison Heights, VA - High winds and low humidity fuel these fires quickly, and that combination can lead to out of control brush fires.
Here in Virginia, you can't burn anything until after 4 p.m. until April 30. But you need to take extra precaution on days like this with the high winds.
"Even cookouts nowadays with people using charcoal grills particularly they take the charcoals out, and they might just dump them on the edge of the woods thinking they're out and they need to make sure they dose those with water to make sure they're completely out," said Gary Roakes, Amherst Co. public safety director .
Roakes says that you should have rakes, shovels and hoses handy when you burn. If you're camping this Spring, keep a 10 ft. area clear around your fire.
