Chatham, VA - Neighbors tried to help, but the fire was too intense to save the life of a Chatham woman Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the house on Friendship Road about 8:15 a.m. Neighbors say they heard screaming and went to the back of the house to try to get in, but just couldn't battle the flames.
Officials say Milicent Whitehead, 53, died in the fire. Firefighters from four different departments responded.
There is no word yet on a cause.
