Amherst Co., VA - Amherst County is investigating a copper theft to one of their public safety radio towers. The tower is located in a remote part of Amherst County near the Rockbridge County line.
Fortunately, officials say the missing copper doesn't affect the tower operation. But if they do have storms and the towers get hit by lightning, it could destroy the whole system because the wires aren't grounded.
"It's just a sign of the economy, and public safety is not exempt just like households and businesses…people will do what they do," said Gary Roakes, director of public safety for Amherst County
Copper has been taken from several other towers in the same area within the last few weeks.
