Amherst Co., VA - Thousands of people are in the dark in the town of Amherst Tuesday.
Public safety officials say someone stole wiring from a transformer causing the power outage.
According to Appalachian power's website 2,178 people are affected. .
Officials say they hope to have power restored between 7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
