Justin Case for April 18, 2012

I drove up to D.C. to watch my Reds and I got squat.

It was the Nationals opening day so the atmosphere was fantastic but my Reds didn't score until the 9th and then lost in the bottom of the 9th because of a wild pitch. They subsequently lost their next two games but luckily salvaged a win Sunday in extra innings. Joey Votto earned some of his $225 mil contract with a big RBI hit in the 11th and a diving stab to end the game.

FYI – if you go up to a Nats game check out THE FAIRGROUNDS AT HALF STREET. It's a big open area near the stadium right across from the metro stop. Plenty of…beverages available but it's family friendly as well.

Speaking of family – a shout out to my 5 ½ month old son Benjamin. He'll be baptized this Sunday so you won't see me on TV. I will be on Saturday at 6 and 11pm. We'll have coverage of VT's and LU's spring games but ACC-Big South baseball, ODAC and Hillcats/Salem Sox coverage.

Back to sports –one thing we try to get to every time is high school sports signings. It's a huge day for area athletes and we've had a slew of them recently. LCA Alana Arias (Palm Beach State), Appomattox's Dylan Caruso (Longwood) and Brookville's Derek Thurman (VMI) all signed the dotted line. Check out west.com for those stories.

Following VT and LU spring games it's going to be all baseball time. LU already had 30 wins and almost beat Georgia on Monday, losing 5-3. VT is coming off a huge 2-1 series win over #6 Miami. UVa got swept by #8 UNC. Both VT and UVa should be factors in the ACC tourney in Greensboro in May. LU will fight for the Big South's #1 seed. Right now perennial power Coastal Carolina is in first place by percentage points.

As always, Rock it out.
