Lynchburg, VA - Some people along the James River are also worried that a proposal from Liberty University will only lead to more student accidents.
According to county officials, the property is zoned "residential." But LU is requesting a special exception. They want to renovate a building along River Road and use it to store equipment like kayaks and canoes for students to use.
The school also wants to build a dock and a boat ramp.
"The river changes daily, nobody knows what is over there. I have seen them go over there with no life jackets. I have seen them cross the abutment and they don't even check the water before they jump. Who is going to look over these students?" said Judy Argenbright, a resident.
The planning commission heard about this project Thursday night and will consider it again in May.
ABC 13 News tried to reach LU officials for a comment but did not hear back.
