Lynchburg, VA - Work is getting ready to start on the new memorial wall honoring students and faculty of the former Dunbar High School in Lynchburg. Dunbar alumni have been busy raising funds to build it.
Friday, they held a groundbreaking ceremony at Dunbar Middle School, where Dunbar High School once stood.
Dunbar High was an all-black school from 1923 until 1970 when it became integrated.
"Through it all, now that we are older and mature, we can look back and say, 'Thank you,' because it has made a better world for the kids now both black and both white," said Dunbar alumni Abraham Hughes.
