Sixth Inning Surge Leads Golden Eagles To Friday Win

Posted: Updated:

The Golden Eagles bats came alive on Friday night and Oral Roberts topped Western Illinois 9-3 at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU (18-18, 5-3 Summit) once again looked like the class of the Summit League as they pounded the Leathernecks pitching for ten hits and nine runs.  Jose Trevino and Nate Goro led ORU with a home run and a double each.  Goro launched his first home run of the season, while Trevino recorded his seventh to go along with three RBI.

Mike Torrence (3-5) allowed no hits through the first four innings and ended up throwing six, allowing two runs off four hits with three strikeouts. Joe Spring would come on to earn the save by pitching three innings of relief and allowing one run with four strikeouts.

WIU (12-21-1, 3-6 Summit) has not won a game at J.L. Johnson Stadium since 1998, and Rob Walton improves to 31-3 all-time against the Leathernecks. Starter Nick Smith gave the Leathernecks four innings, allowing two runs off six hits. Alexander Zarate (0-2) allowed four runs, all unearned, off one hit and five walks in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Golden Eagles, who started the game 1-8 versus left-handed starters, wasted no time jumping on Western Illinois' lefty Nick Smith, scoring a run in the bottom of the first with a Trevino single to score Cho. ORU extended the lead to 2-0 in the second with a groundout byLogan Domenico that scored Jake O'Brien.

Western Illinois was able to rally in the sixth and tie the game  2-2, but ORU answered right back by scoring four runs in the sixth off back-to-back walks with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Bennett Pickar.  Goro and Trevino's home runs in the seventh inning scored three more runs to put the game out of reach, 9-2.

The series will resume on Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
