Lynchburg, VA - A local high school senior is raising money to help fight breast cancer. And she's done it by baking hundreds of cupcakes.
Katie Nuyland is a senior at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. She's put together the Cupcakes and Tea Party event for the past three years.
Each year, all the money goes to the national Breast Cancer Research Center. It's something that's close to Nuyland's heart. A family friend was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago.
"That's what inspired me to put together this fundraiser. I have a love for baking and a passion to find a cure for breast cancer so I put those two loves together and came up with this event," Upland said.
Last year, the fundraiser brought in more than $6,500. Upland hopes this year's event will match or surpass that mark.
