Greenberg Reacts to VT Firing

Blacksburg -   Seth Greenberg says he was completely shocked and blindsided by the decision of Athletic Director Jim Weaver and the administration to fire him.

Greenberg, Tech's head basketball coach the past nine seasons, told that he leaves the program in far greater shape than when he was hired.  He said he appreciates the support from Tech President Charles Steger, the Hokie Nation, student body, his coaches and players.   Weaver told Greenberg of his decision Monday at 1:30.

Weaver said he and Associate A.D. Tom Gabbard realized they would not extend Greenberg's contract next year and that the three current staff openings factored into the decision to let him go now.
Weaver admitted to have as many assistants leave the program as Tech did in recent years sat the wrong way with him, and that the decision to fire Greenberg had nothing to do with losing or NCAA appearances.

Jim Weaver, VIRGINIA TECH ATHLETICS DIRECTOR, said "Continuity goes a long way in establishing successful operations whether it's in athletics or the business world or whatever."

This past season matched the Hokies' worst in the ACC at 4-and-12, 16-and-17 overall. Weaver said the search for a new coach begins right away.  Names already being mentioned as possible candidates include VCU's Shaka Smart and Wichita State's Gregg Marshall, a Roanoke native.
