Lynchburg, VA - Students at three Lynchburg schools celebrated some new funding by walking to class Tuesday morning.
The sidewalks were very busy near Perrymont, Dearington, and TC Miller Elementary schools.
This marks the second "Walk to School Day" in Lynchburg.
Earlier this year, the city received about $377,000 in grants from VDOT to make pedestrian routes to school safer. The goal of Tuesday is to increase interest in walking to school.
"It's unique for most of these children. We don't have many children who walk to school so the novelty of it was very appealing. They definitely want to keep doing it," said Karen Nelson, principal.
"It's really fun because you don't have to sit on the bus and just wait to get off and then go to school. You get to walk and talk to your friends too," said Ty'shanea Mays, a 5th grader.
"Walk to School Day" has been such a big hit, the school district plan to hold one every spring and fall.
