Virginia Tech has hired a new men's basketball coach, according to multiple sources.

James Johnson was an assistant on the Virginia Tech staff and now has the head coaching job.

Johnson was an assistant with the Hokies since 2007, most recently Seth Greenberg's Associate Head Coach.

He just left the program a couple weeks ago to take an assistant coaching job at Clemson but will now return to Blacksburg.

The former Ferrum standout player informed Clemson coach Brad Brownell that he had accepted the job this morning after reportedly interviewing over the weekend.

Hokies point guard Erick Green tweeted he would be back next year and forward Cadarian Raines said he was throwing a party.

Tech is expected to have a news conference tomorrow or Wednesday.

Johnson has coached at 10 different schools, including Longwood, Hargrave, ODU, Penn State and George Mason.

Johnson is popular with Tech players and the move could encourage recruiting commitments like Marshall Wood of Rustburg to stay with the Hokies.

Rustburg High School head coach Brantley Shields says the Johnson choice "definitely helps" for Wood to stay with Tech but he will have to meet with Johnson before a decision is made.

Shields also says even more teams are now in the mix for Wood.
