Justin Case for April 30, 2012

It's kind of like the NFL draft, you can't evaluate the pick immediately. VT AD Jim Weaver may have been forced into hiring a less than establish assistant simply because of timing.

A wide array of jobs (Illinois, Winthrop, Ohio, etc) have already been filled. Hiring Johnson, who was an assistant with Tech, should help the likelihood of retaining two recruits Montrezl Harrell and Marshall Wood. Rustburg coach Brantley Shields says the Johnson choice "definitely helps" for Wood to stay with Tech but he will have to meet with Johnson before a decision is made.

Shields also says even more teams are now in the mix for Wood. One of those could be Maryland because Terrell Stoglin left for the NBA after getting suspended for a student violation.

Don't look now but UVa baseball is surging. As I type they've already taken the first two games against Miami. They go for the sweep Monday night. They're now in 2nd place in the ACC Coastal Division and within striking distance of UNC:

Lynchburg's Brandon Inge started at third base for the Oakland A's Monday night in Boston.

It's hard to believe but he's an upgrade for the A's. Oakland's other third basemen are hitting a combined .111 with eight errors. Inge can still play defense. He turns in web gems often but his bat has been lacking.         Inge was released last week by the Tigers after 12 seasons and signed a one-year deal with the A's.

Hillcats catcher Evan Gattis has been called up to Double-A Mississippi.

It's well deserved. He was hitting .385 with a league leading 9 homers and 29 RBIs. He continued his tear on the 7-game road trip and I planned to go to City Stadium Monday to do a feature story on him and when I called over there, he had already been called up and was on a flight to join his new team.

For Gattis interesting background, check out this story from last year.

LCA's Michael Rocco now has even more competition as UVa's quarterback.

Philip Sims out of Oscar Smith High School is Chesapeake is transferring from Alabama...and is headed to Charlottesville.

Sims was a backup QB on Alabama's national championship team and he could play this fall through an NCAA appeal citing family circumstances, avoiding having to sit out a year.

Shout out to the ABC 13 Sports Department. We received the AP award for meritorious achievement in YEAR ROUND SPORTS COVERAGE. The blurb about us said "This station meets its commitment to high school football by a fast-paced show with multiple elements that add interest. In other areas they look for the human interest in sports stories. Great job."

We try to live up to this statement each and every day. Thanks for watching and thanks for reading this blog. As always, rock it out.
