Hokies Introduce Johnson as New Hoops Coach

Blacksburg -  James Johnson has not been a head coach at any level but that did not prevent him from securing the biggest job he's ever had.  Virginia Tech Athletic director Jim Weaver says retaining current players and recruits was a priority.

Jim Weaver said "Since James was so involved in both those processes, I think that was a factor that weighed in his favor."  One recruit is Rustburg's Marshall Wood.

New Hokies Head Coach James Johnson said "We still feel the same way about him and hopefully he'll feel the same way about Virginia Tech and we want him in our program."

Players say Johnson's energetic and vocal but is the program better off now than it was ten days ago?

Erick Green, VIRGINIA TECH RISING SENIOR, said "Yeah I can say that because of the fact that I think everybody's on board now. I think that everybody's going to stick around and we're going to have a great year. We're positive. We're upbeat and we're just excited right now. We haven't been excited like this in a long time."

James Johnson said "I go from now being a suggestion maker to a decision maker. Instead of me being one of the four guys yelling in the head coach's ear to we need to do this, we need to do that. I go and now have four guys yelling in my ear and now I have to be a decision maker on which one of those things we're going to do."

Johnson signed a 5-year contract worth $680,000 a year.
