Former Driver Charged With Sexually Abusing Children

Campbell Co., VA - A former transport driver is charged with sexually abusing four children he drove to and from a mental health clinic in Gladys.

Lewis Michael Hunt Jr. is charged with six counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, and four of those cases allegedly happened when they were in his care.

The Campbell County Sheriff says for the last year and a half he drove children to and from the Harvest Outreach Center, a nonprofit organization that serves children with behavioral problems.

The mental health clinic released a statement saying they are saddened by what has happened. But they want to make it very clear that Hunt was not an employee of theirs.  They say the company he worked for, Graves Transport, was being contracted to pick up kids and take them to the facility.

Erica Owen lives three driveways down from the Harvest Outreach Center and recognizes the man in the mug shot. Last summer, she says Hunt's van broke down near her house.

"He was real friendly. He wasn't what I would have expected to do anything like that to the kids," Owen explained.

The Campbell County Sheriff says the 33-year-old Pittsylvania County man was working for Graves Transport when he sexually abused and inappropriately touched four children he drove to and from the Gladys facility.

"We've looked at everybody that would have been in contact with this subject and there may be more cases out there," said Sheriff Steve Hutcherson.

Harvest Outreach released the following statement:

"We are saddened to hear of these allegations. What has been alleged did not involve any of the dedicated employees of Harvest Outreach and did not occur at any of the facilities of Harvest Outreach. Since learning of these allegations we fully cooperated with the authorities and we will continue to do so."

For Owen, a mother herself, all of it hits too close to home.

"Hopefully justice does these kids some good cause they deserve it," she said

The sheriff would not say where the alleged sexual abuse happened or how old the victims were.

Hunt has been released from the Campbell County Detention Center on bond.
