Car Chase Ends in Crash, Some Injured & Man Charged

Salem, VA – Officials have charged a man after they say he led police on a short chase that ended in a crash.

Mychel Wilkins, 21, was charged with driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Police say they tried to pull over Wilkins after they saw that he was sliding his pickup truck sideways in the parking lot of Salem Stadium. Instead, police say Wilkins sped away. After a short chase, Wilkins' truck crashed in someone's backyard.

According to police, the pickup truck flipped over and hit the house which was occupied at the time. No one was injured in the house.

The four people in the pickup truck were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Wilkins was listed in critical condition.

Officials say the crash caused about $10,000 in property damage to the house, and the pickup truck is a total loss.

Police are still investigating the incident.
