Radford, VA - Crews are investigating an overnight foundry explosion in Radford.
Radford firefighters got a call around 12:15 Sunday morning about an explosion at the Grede Foundry.
Fire Chief Lee Simpkins says one of the holding furnaces exploded shooting a 4'8" piece of steel up through the ceiling.
It caused a large hole in the ceiling to form.
Simpkins said the steel landed 200 feet away from the foundry.
There were 10 people inside the plant at the time of the explosion. Fortunately, Simpkins says, no one was hurt.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
Grede Foundry bought the foundry from Virginia Castings about 30 day ago.
