Danville, VA- A 7th grader from Danville is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this week.
Madison Fuentes, 13, is a student at Westover Christian Academy and has participated in district and regional spelling bees for the last three years.
Millions of students around the world try out for the National Spelling Bee, but only 278 are actually chosen to compete in D.C.
Madison has a great family support system and her mom Christy is her biggest cheerleader.
She's a very humble girl who is the oldest of four children. Her interests include history, band, piano, sports and going to medical lectures with her father, a local doctor.
"I find it such an honor to compete with all these people some of the smartest people in the country and around the world, and I'm glad that I will be able to meet some new people and just compete overall," said Madison Fuentes.
The winner of the National Spelling Bee will receive about $30,000 in scholarship money and the competition will be televised live on ESPN.
