Charlottesville - The 64-team field for this year's NCAA Baseball Championship was released Monday and Virginia has earned the top seed in the Charlottesville Regional.
The Cavaliers open regional play Friday afternoon at 4 against Army at Davenport Field, with two seed Oklahoma battling number 3 Appalachian State at 8. Friday's losing teams will play an elimination game Saturday at 1, Friday's winners play Saturday at 6.
Brian O'Connor, Virginia Baseball Coach, said "We certainly earned this regional host for what we did in the last four or five weeks of the year. And so that's satisfying obviously that we came out and earned it and we deserve this opportunity. You know a lot of teams faded down the stretch and this club got better. And that gives us a lot of confidence moving into this weekend."
Florida is the number one seed nationally, followed by UCLA, Florida State, Baylor, Oregon and North Carolina. Florida was ranked number one in every major preseason poll. North Carolina is 6.
The Charlottesville Regional winner meets the Columbia Regional winner the following Friday. That regional includes host South Carolina, Clemson, Coastal Carolina and Manhattan. Virginia Tech and Liberty did not receive at-large bids.
