Lynchburg, VA - A Lynchburg man is dead after a tanker truck overturned in Montvale Monday night.
State police officials say Adam Henry, 31, of Lynchburg was driving Watts Petroleum truck on 460 when it turned over and 7,000 gallons of fuel leaked out, forcing 50 homes to be evacuated.
Route 460 eastbound is still shutdown and VDOT is rerouting traffic on the west bound side.
Officials say to avoid this area if possible because the road may be closed for several days depending on how the cleanup process goes.
State police officials say there is some damage on the road. They say the fuel has deteriorated parts of it, making it impassable to traffic right now.
As for the driver, Henry, police say he was trapped in the truck for several hours and had to be extricated by emergency crews. They say he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's very important to wear your seatbelt. If I could send one message, the common denominator when we talk all the time, these crashes involve people not wearing their seatbelts," said Sgt. Bob Carpentieri with Virginia State Police.
Sgt. Bob Carpentieri says those who had been evacuated should be back in their homes at this hour.
