Amherst Co.,VA - Another tractor trailer accident shut down a busy road in our area. This one happened on Route 130 in Amherst County on Snowden Mountain. State police say the driver walked away with minor injuries.

VDOT closed Route 130 West and Route 501 North toward Rockbridge County for hours Thursday morning as cleanup crews picked up debris from the accident. The road was reopend at around 5 p.m.

State police say this type of wreck happens all too often on that section of roadway.

A flatbed tractor trailer toppled over a little after 9 a.m. It was carrying thousands of pounds of cardboard that spilled onto Snowden Mountain and brought traffic to stand still.

"I thought, 'Holy cow.' I guess I'm going to be sitting here for a while. And we have for about an hour and a half," said Ethan Hagner, who was stuck in traffic.

When first responders arrived on the scene, the driver of the tractor trailer Keith Thompson, 47, had pulled himself out of the wreckage with only minor injuries.

Rob Cundiff was just a few trucks behind Thompson before the accident.

"I was shocked to see that his truck was turned over. It made me think maybe it was loaded wrong, and maybe his load shifted a little," said Cundiff.

That's what State police concluded as well charging Thompson with failing to secure his load. Emergency officials say this accident highlights once again just how dangerous this turn on Route 130 can be.

"It's in the general location where Mr. Dennis Cash was killed when another tractor trailer overturned," said Gary Roakes, Amherst Co. Public Safety Director.

Dennis Cash, 64, was killed on Route 130 in February as he was cleaning up an accident from an overturned trailer carrying gravel. For truck drivers, both of these accident are reminders of the caution needed on Route 130.

"You just have to be real careful sometimes if you meet in the turns together. You have to wait for the truck other one to pass," said Cundiff.
