Gear Up for Construction on Wards Ferry Road

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Part of Wards Ferry Road will be shut down for two months beginning next week while work crews replace two culverts.

The construction is happening between Heritage High School and Lynchburg First Church of the Nazarene.  The busy thoroughfare will shut down to all traffic June 11 through August 13.

A pastor at Lynchburg First Church of the Nazarene says they've been warning the roughly 450 members to use Harvard Street or Atlanta Avenue instead.

"It may be a bit of an inconvenience for a few weeks. But, that's alright. It'll open back up eventually," said Cavan Carlton.

The city doesn't have a list of recommended detours because it all depends on where you're coming from and trying to go.  For one nearby resident, the Lynchburg Expressway is the best choice.

"It just means a little extra traffic and a little extra planning ahead to try to get back home," said Dianne Foster.

City engineers held two public meetings and sent out over 400 postcards warning residents of the closure.

"It is an inconvenience and we are aware of that and we tried to mitigate that as much as possible," said Dee Dee Conner, the project's engineer.

Many say more improvements are needed, like adding sidewalks and traffic lights.

"It's very dangerous for kids to be walking on the side of the road," said Anthony Dean.

Right now, the city says there's no money in the budget to make more improvements to Wards Ferry Road. But city engineers expect there will be in the distant future.
