Danville, VA - Three African American Churches on the Southside hosted a "Project Life" kickoff event during their Sunday morning services.
A study conducted about a year ago in the Danville Pittsylvania County region by VA Commonwealth University's Cancer Research Center and the Tobacco Commission found some alarming health statistics in the African American communities.
So Bibleway Cathedral, East New Hope Baptist and Shockoe Missionary Baptist partnered in getting the message out about the link between cancer and obesity.
"The black churches are very strong and influential institution in the lives of African American people, we have historically gone to the church, you know seeking advice, seeking support, seeking comfort," said Bibleway Project Life Lead Coach Wanda Foster.
Over the next 10 months, the Project Life initiative aims to help people change their unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.
