Radford, VA – Officials say 840 people are getting laid off at the Radford Army Ammunitions plant.
ATK's contract runs out at the end of the month, and a new company, BAE Systems, begins operating there on July 1.
That contractor does have the option of hiring back as many people who have been laid off as they want.
But for the time being, layoffs are underway.
They started in March and will end with the final layoff of 580 people on June 29.
Employees affected will get outplacement services and severance benefits.
