Franklin Co., VA - Two Rocky Mount men are now facing felonies after investigators accused them of stealing the gun... used in that suicide.
It all happened at the Blackwater River Wayside, along US 220, Monday afternoon.
Charges have been filed against 21 year old Ameche Pettie and 26-year old Kenneth Caldwell, Jr., both of Rocky Mount.
Investigators say Pettie and Caldwell happened upon the suicide scene, stole the weapon used, and then called 911 to report the body.
When investigators arrived and were unable to find a gun - that was clearly used in the death - the first few hours were treated as though this was a potential murder.
It took investigators a few hours to put it all together and zero in on three men... two of whom were charged today.
Authorities say this investigation, which should have taken two hours, ended up taking two days.
"The Virginia State Police divers were used to search the river adjacent to the scene there. Obviously they were unable to find a firearm. We contacted the Rocky Mount Police Department and utilized their detective canine for the firearm; which again turned up negative. After that it was just investigators conducting interviews," said Lt. Todd Maxey with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.
The gun was eventually recovered.
Caldwell was arrested for being an accessory to grand larceny of a firearm and making a false report to police.
His alleged partner, Pettie, is still on the loose charged with grand larceny of a firearm.
