Danville, VA -- A very scary situation for a Danville resident who was held up with a knife in her own backyard. Linda Bradley has lived in the same house for four years and says she has never heard of something like this happening.
It started as just an ordinary day for Bradley, sitting in her back yard listening to the radio.
"I noticed this guy was walking around with a blue shirt and plaid shorts and the second time he came up he asked me for $40," said Bradley.
At first, Bradley says she told the stranger, "No" and then the unthinkable happened.
"He said well I need $40, demanded $40. So when I see him pull a knife out, 'I said I am going to get you the $40,'" said Bradley.
She then headed inside.
"He chased me into the house. My daughter was on the couch sleeping and I said, 'Sherika dial 9-11 because there is a man behind me with a knife,'" said Bradley.
Bradley says when the man heard the threat of police, he ran off. The Danville Police Department says they found the man, Christopher Michael Yeatts of Pittsylvania County, in the area and arrested him.
Neighbors describe Hartford Street as peaceful and say they are still shocked that something like that could happen here.
"It's real scary when something hits your street like that...I never thought it would never happen," said Donna Hylton, a neighbor.
"It definitely rattles some bones in me. I'm very shocked and I'm sorry it happened to her," said Brenda Moore, a neighbor.
Now that a suspect is behind bars, Bradley says she can feel some relief.
"I feel safer, much safer. But I would be cautious sitting outside by myself," said Bradley.
Yeatts has been charged with breaking and entering and attempted robbery.
