Campbell Co., VA - Campbell County investigators are trying to get to the bottom of a mystery in a private graveyard.
The site is located off Mitchell Springs Road in Evington, and investigators say the grave plot located in the back corner of the property has a cross headstone with the name "Belly" on it. The graveyard dates back to the 1700s, but a mystery has rocked this plot of land.
"It's just one of those things that makes you scratch your head," said Mike Milnor, senior investigator with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.
About two weeks ago, officials got word of a fresh grave marked with a homemade wooden cross, labeled "Belly."
"I've got 30 years in as now and I'll have to say, just when you think you've seen it all, there's always something else that will pop up," said Milnor.
They have interviewed family of those buried there, along with neighbors, but no one seems to know who Belly is.
"We think there's a high likelihood that is probably is just that someone's family pet, but by the same token, we've got to establish what is actually buried here," said Milnor.
Now investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward by the end of the week, otherwise the grave will be dug up.
"We'll have to approach it with the mindset that this is a potential homicide and then we will be pleasantly surprised when we do find animal remains or something like that," said Milnor.
Investigators say if it is a pet, whoever buried it there is not in trouble.
The grave site is now under constant surveillance by the sheriff's office. If no one comes forward by Friday, early next week a forensic unit will be on site to do an excavation. It is unknown if the investigation will lead to charges.
