Madison Heights, VA - The River-edge Park in Madison Heights is undergoing some major renovations this summer.
The Smiley Block Boat Ramp on the Amherst County side of the James River has been closed for the remaining summer months to accommodate construction crews.
All boat traffic has been diverted to Griffin Pipe in Lynchburg. But Amherst County Parks and Rec officials say the closure is well worth the wait.
The park is set to become a premiere fishing and hiking location for the entire Blue Ridge region. Even workers at the James River Float Company, who used the closed Smiley Block Boat Ramp can't wait for the park to re-open.
They're hoping its updates will boost business. "I think the park here is going to kind of rejuvenate the area. Attract a lot of attention here, that wasn't necessarily here before. I think it's going to be great for the area, "said Bryce Mayhew the Manager of James River Float Company
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
