Amherst, VA - Dozens and dozens of flowers disappeared from grave sites in Amherst, and now the police department has them back.
Officials say they were stolen, and now they want to give them back.
The investigation started around Mother's Day. The victims were visiting their parents' graves at the Amherst Cemetery when they discovered the flowers they left were missing.
Police say this past weekend someone saw an elderly woman in her 70's, pull her car into the cemetery, open the trunk and begin loading silk flowers into her vehicle.
They took pictures and police tracked her down. She's believed to suffer from a medical condition and has not been arrested. But charges are pending.
The police chief says anyway you look at it, it's a sad situation.
"This is sacred ground to a lot of people. And they come here to receive some peace and some comfort. You would hope this would be a crime free zone," said Chief Kelvin Brown with the Amherst Police Department.
The police department has beefed up patrol in the area.
Anyone who has noticed a flower arrangement has gone missing from the Amherst Cemetery should contact investigator Timothy Maberry at 434-946-7874.
