Danville, VA -- Pittsylvania County Libraries are seeing a huge increase in members, and they say it is because of what's happening in Danville.

Starting next month, the Danville Public Library will charge anyone who does not live in the city a $50 annual fee to check out books. Many Pittsylvania County residents are leaving the city library and going to the county.

Director of the Pittsylvania County Library Diane Adkins says she worries this could hurt literacy rates.

"From my perspective this is not necessarily helpful to that goal, that would be my problem with it, I guess," said Adkins.

The director of Danville's Libraries says she believes that the change will not hurt literacy. The fee will not apply for use of the library but just for just checking items out.
