Salem, VA - Keeping chickens in the backyard is now a legitimate activity in Salem.
City Council voted 4 to 1 to end nearly two years of debate and research on the issue.
Last year, council considered banning chicken keeping in the city because of complaints.
The new ordinance allows up to six chickens but no roosters. It prohibits the selling of eggs or chickens and restricts where coops can be.
Owners have to declare their chickens to the city by August 1.
They will have two years to bring their flocks and coops into compliance.
