Update: 12-Year-Old Dies on Smith Mountain Lake

Update 3 p.m.:

Franklin Co., VA - Officials are investigating the drowning of a 12-year-old Mecklenburg County, N.C. girl at Smith Mountain Lake.

Officials say the girl was on a float next to a dock Friday when she fell in the water. Her body was discovered underwater using sonar. Her identity has not been released. 

An autopsy is planned. 

The girl was with her family visiting relatives at the lake.

Update 12:45 p.m.:

Franklin Co., VA - Officials say a 12-year-old girl drowned Friday morning on Smith Mountain Lake. 

The Franklin County public Safety Director says it happened around 10 a.m. The girl was on an inflatable raft when the incident happened. She was at the lake with her family. 

Pittsylvania County and Franklin County officials both responded.  

The scene has been cleared.

Franklin Co., VA – Officials are on the scene of a possible drowning on Smith Mountain Lake.

Officials say they received a call reporting that a child had gone missing from a float on a dock around 10 a.m. Friday.

Crews are at Penhook Point, on the Pittsylvania County and Franklin County line.
