---------------------------
A powerful windstorm has developed across Virginia, affecting most of our viewing area.
The storm, called a derecho, is a straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms.
This storm is packing 60 – 80 mph winds. Our weathercasters advice that you stay indoors.
The gusty and damaging winds may come ahead of rain. There have been numerous damage reports in our area.
In Lynchburg, major branches are down on Fifth Street and Hollins Mill Road. Also, Fifth Street by the cemetery is blocked. There are also major branches down on Rivermont Avenue, and the area between Virginia Baptist Church and Oakwood Swim and Tennis Club is blocked off.
According to officials, Roanoke County Fire & Rescue has responded to hundreds of calls since the storm hit Roanoke County. The calls received include downed trees and power lines, fire alarms and other assorted calls. Additionally, there is a small brush fire off of Catawba Valley Drive that crews are not able to fight at this time because of a live downed power line that is believed to have sparked the blaze.
