Bedford Co.,VA- After all the destruction from Friday night's storm, a sad story out of Bedford County. A Big Island couple passed away in a house fire Saturday morning.
Officials cannot be sure the fire was a result of the storm. But there was a power line down in their yard close to their home. And officials say the fire started at about 3:30 a.m., about thirty minutes after power came back on.
We talked to several neighbors who knew the couple well. They say this couple was well-known for being very kind, and very involved in their church.
But beyond that, is an epic love story that could give any romance novel a run for its money. Two weeks of courting, led to almost 70 years of marriage.
"They were like lovebirds and they were just wonderful to live with," said a neighbor and close friend.
She'd known the couple for her entire life. So when she heard the news, she felt like her favorite love story had come to a tragic end.
But even though she's mourning the loss of her friends, she's comforted by the thought that they're still together.
A relative of the couple says they were beloved by their church and community. He says that they hardly missed a church service, and tithed every week, even when their health kept them from the sanctuary.
He also says it was easy to see how much the couple loved each other.
"They, you know, they just showed a lot of love for each other. They just thought the world and all for each other and it showed," said Richard Nichols, a relative and neighbor.
Nichols drives a church bus for senior citizens in the area.
He says he loved giving the couple a ride, and has something he will always remember them by.
"She gave me an angel one time and said put it up over the sun visor. And she said you keep this up there honey and this angel will take care of you and look after you while you drive these people around. It's just a sad day for everybody in this community," said Nichols.
Bedford County officials have not yet released the couple's name. As of Saturday afternoon, relatives had not been notified of the couple's passing.
