Franklin County Storm Recovery Information

Franklin County Public Safety released the following information regarding Friday's storm recovery efforts:

Storm Recovery information: Residents may call (540) 483-3045 for additional information regarding storm recovery and related efforts including shelter information.

Damage assessments-Franklin County residents, whose property received storm related damages not covered by their insurance carrier, are requested to contact the Franklin County Department of Public Safety Office at 540-483-3091 beginning Monday, July 2, 2012 at 8:30am. Uninsured storm damage estimates are used by federal government officials to determine if a storm affected area qualifies for disaster relief.

Storm debris management-County officials ask that storm related debris be brought to the Franklin County Landfill where it can be disposed of free of charge through Saturday, July 7, 2012. Large roll off containers have also been placed at the following sites for storm related debris:

Hardy-Hardy Road

Glade Hill- Colonial Turnpike

Scruggs-Scruggs Road

Burnt Chimney-Burnt Chimney Road

Boones Mill-Church Hill Street

Residents are reminded that vegetation cannot be deposited in regular county green boxes designated for household trash only. Storm debris management plans are posted on the county web page at: http://www.franklincountyva.gov. and have been sent to local media outlets.

Shelter/Cooling Center-Franklin County and the American Red Cross are operating a Cooling center/Shelter for residents. The Cooling Center/Shelter is located at the Ben Franklin Middle School, 225 Middle School Dr. in Rocky Mount. Showers are available and residents can charge cell phone and computer batteries. Residents do not have to stay at the shelter. Meals are being provided by the Red Cross. Potable water is available but residents need to bring their own containers.

Residents desiring to stay in the shelter need to bring their medications and other essential items with them. Pets are allowed but are being housed in a separate location at the shelter. The only pets that are being accepted are dogs and cats.

Power restoration: County officials have been advised by American Electric Power (AEP) that they project that power will be restored to citizens by Saturday July 7, 2012. This is a revised estimate from AEP as of 11:00 a.m. 7/2/12. Please do not call 9-1-1 to report power outages.

Residents on home oxygen: Residents on home oxygen should contact their oxygen delivery service if their supply is low and need additional bottles. Persons on oxygen concentrators are being accepted into the Shelter at Ben Franklin Middle School. Residents going to stay at the shelter should bring their oxygen concentrators with them.

Potable water fill locations: Residents needing potable water can go to the following locations to fill water containers. Residents will need to bring their own containers to these sites:

Westlake Sheriff's Office/Public Safety station-13205 Booker T. Washington Hwy, Hardy VA, 24101. (Located at the intersection of Booker T. Washington Hwy and Scruggs Rd).

Boones Mill Fire Department-25355 Virgil H. Goode Hwy, Boones Mill VA, 24065. Located in the Town of Boones Mill on US 220 at the intersection with Angell Lane.

Ben Franklin Middle School-225 Middle School Dr., Rocky Mount VA, 24151. (Located between State Street and US 220 on North Main Street in Rocky Mount).
