Update: Identities Released in Fatal Crash


Update: Wednesday 5:30 p.m.

State Police have identified the victims in Tuesday's deadly crash on I-81.  They say 73-year-old Barbara Barnette was killed.  77-year-old Orvil Barnette was injured in the crash and remains hospitalized in Roanoke.  They were both from Carrollton, Virginia.


Montgomery Co., VA – One person is dead after a car accident I-81 Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say a man, along with his wife as the passenger and their two kids in the back, were driving north on the right lane when he ran off the right side of the road and hit a guard rail.

The mother was partially ejected. She was taken to the hospital where she later died. The husband was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial with life-threatening injuries. Neither had seatbelts on at the time of the crash.

The children, an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, were in car seats. Both were taken to New River Valley Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The family is from Carrollton, VA.
