Lynchburg - The Hillcats scored nine runs the first three innings en route to an 11-7 Fourth of July win over Wilmington.
Lynchburg City Stadium was packed as it always is for the Independence Day game and fireworks to follow, always the biggest crowd of the year. And the home team gave fans plenty to cheer about starting with the very first inning.
Hillcats shortstop Nick Ahmed drives one to right center field off the wall, Ahmed races around for a triple and later scores, 1-0 Hillcats. And Lynchburg was just getting started, David Rohm belts a two-run homer in the second to make it 3-0, that triggered a five-run outburst that included Mycal Jones' two-run triple, 6-0 Hillcats after just two innings.
That was more than enough for Aaron Northcraft, who struck out nine and allowed just four hits, two runs in seven innings. Chris Garcia and Shawn McGill also homered, three Lynchburg homers on the night.
The Rocks got five runs in the ninth but Lynchburg holds on for the 11-7 win. The two teams will play game two of the three-game series Thursday night in Lynchburg.
