Amherst Co., VA – A group of people in Amherst County decided to take matters into their own hands after a downed tree wasn't touched by crews for a week.
The residents live at the intersection of Pizza Walton and Coolwell roads. Friday, they decided to start removing the tree themselves. During Friday's storm, it knocked over a power pole and blocked a few driveways.
These residents say they asked AEP to come out and were told they still had to wait.
"I worked 12 hours last night, you know, I wanted to go home and go to bed but I seen this gentlemen starting to cut the tree when I stopped by and said, ‘You know what I'm not going to bed I'm going to stop and help and we are going to get some power for today'," said Brian Briggs.
Power officials say it is very dangerous to remove a tree on a downed line. Your safest bet is to leave it to the power crews.
