Speakeasy Brings Danville to the Past

Danville, VA - A very unique fundraiser in Danville will bring you back nearly a century. The Historical Society along with Southern Events Solutions are putting on a speakeasy, which was a place that illegally served alcohol during prohibition.

For this fundraiser, it's all about who you know.

"That's how you find out. You call the secret number and you meet up at a secret location," said Mandy Stowe, founder Southern Events Solutions.

So we tried it out - dialing a number on a card, putting us straight through to the past. Then the secret starts.

During prohibition, speakeasies relied on keeping that information away from authorities.

"At that time the date, time, and location are revealed to you. You show up at the date, time, and location, knock on the secret door three times and you are in," said Stowe.

"These were secret places where people could have a good party and they could drink alcohol," said Sarah Latham, president of Danville Historical Society.

During the speakeasy, they plan to keep it authentic - costumes and all - right down to the location.

"It's legend that it used to be a speakeasy back in the 1920s and 30s and there is actually a tunnel," said Stowe.

There will be dancing, gaming, and of course drinking.

"I think this is the first time this has been done in Danville in a very long time," said Stowe.

But when the party ends, they hope a little bit of history will wear off.

"As we look at the historic district trying to bring back our historic downtown to a new renewed hay day. It's fun to look back and bring the two together," said Latham.

We did find out a little bit of the information for you, the speakeasy will happen sometime later this month but we can't tell you the day, time or location. All of the money will go toward the Historical Society. If you want to go, you better start asking around.
