Buchanan, VA - After months of making headlines including two recent misdemeanor charges, Buchanan's volunteer Fire Chief Billy Joe Carter is stepping down.
Carter told ABC 13 by phone Thursday afternoon that the decision "breaks his heart" to resign, but that he has been "beat up too bad".
Carter, whose resignation was not accepted earlier this year, was charged with making a threat to a Roanoke City firefighter who runs an online blog that has been critical of Carter.
A warrant was also signed out against Carter for an incident at the Buchanan Fair last week.
Carter will remain a volunteer firefighter. He says he is exploring legal action against the firefighter who runs the blog and the City of Roanoke.
