Presidential Rally Preparations: What To Expect

Roanoke, VA - President Obama is set to speak Friday at 7 p.m.

If you were in downtown Roanoke at all Thursday, you noticed the closed streets and the hundreds of crew members that have been brought in to set this event up.

If you were one of the few who got a ticket, or if you're going to be in Roanoke Friday, there are some things you need to keep in mind.

Whether you're a ticket holder, or just a Roanoke regular, be prepared.

"Doors are going to open at 5. The event will start soon thereafter. People are going to start lining up a lot earlier," said Emma Webb, an Obama campaign worker.

Campaign reps say for ticket holders, come early. Lines will be long, and you can expect to wait.

"We recommend to get here as early as you prefer. But there is going to be a line to wait in," said Webb.

General admission is first come-first serve for those spots beneath the Presidential podium.

"It's a smaller venue than normal, I don't think questions are going to be taken from the audience, but it is a smaller venue, so it is going to be more up close and personal with the President," said Webb.

Campaign officials say expect airport style security. So limit items to the small and personal: no backpacks, no umbrellas and no drinks.

"Small purses are ok. Limit your personal items. Cameras and cell phones are definitely okay, but we don't want to bring water, umbrellas, sharp objects, stuff like that," said Webb.

For those Roanoke residents not seeing the president, avoid Market Street. Church Avenue, between Williamson and Jefferson, is closed as of Thursday. Market Square, between Campbell and Church Avenues, is also closed.

Starting at noon Friday, Jefferson Street, between Franklin and Campbell, will also be closed. As will Kirk, between Jefferson Street and Williamson Road.

All the stores on those streets will remain open to foot traffic though.

As for parking, street parking on open city streets is available. All city garages will be open with the exception of the Market Parking Garage.
