Lynchburg Getting Back to Normal

Lynchburg, VA - Although it's the two week anniversary of the derecho, a lot of folks are still trying to get back to normal. For nearly two weeks, tens of thousands were without power for several days and businesses were forced to close. But finally, life in Lynchburg is calming down.

Everything from the temperature outside to the long lines at the gas station made the last several days tough. But now, Friday Cheers is back on, and many are looking forward to just having a little fun after a stressful couple of weeks.

"We're really excited to bring Friday Cheers back. It's been an interesting summer to say the least," said Anna Bentson, director of Lynch's Landing.

Friday Cheers had to cancel twice this year because of bad weather. Bentson says she wants to use Friday to celebrate the city's recovery.

"The past few weeks have been pretty traumatic for the city of Lynchburg," she said.

Josh Meetre is one of many who had to fully restock his refrigerator. He was on vacation when the power went out, so all of his food went to waste.

"To fully replenish our refrigerator was somewhere around $200, so yeah, that's a lot," said Meetre.

Lowe's is no longer plagued with empty shelves.

"Everything's back in stock but the Gatorade," said Neil Prager, manager, Lowe's.

The storm left the department store without generators, chainsaws, and gas cans for several days.

"We're fully back in stock and we're glad to have the town running the way it was before," said Prager.

Things have slowed down at the Richland Hills Exxon too.

"We were working doubles just trying to keep up," said Jerry Etheridge at Richland Hills Exxon.

The storm caused them to run out of ice, gas and propane.

"I'm glad to get back to normal, just for the people, it slows business down but you know, I'm glad they have their power back," said Etheridge.

This Friday and next week at Friday Cheers, Lynch's Landing is letting AEP and city workers in for free to thank them for all their hard work. The only requirement is to bring a photo ID.
