Lynchburg, VA- A local legislator says the Route 29 Bypass in Charlottesville is the closest it has ever been to becoming a reality. But some environmental groups in Charlottesville are trying to put a stop to it.
Last week, the Southern Environmental Law Center released a YouTube Video against the bypass. The video suggest alternatives to the bypass like adding more lanes, and overpasses.
They argue the bypass is just too expensive. Senator Steve Newman, a long supporter of the bypass, says the plans are actually under budget. He says there is a study underway to address environmental concerns.
"There is currently an environmental study which is an updated version of an old study. That study should come through and be complete. We should be able to move forward with shovels moving in the next year," said Senator Newman (R) 23rd District.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board signed the design-build- this June for contract for 135 million dollars this June. The contract includes engineering and construction to start the bypass.
