Experts Give Tips for Running in the Heat

Danville, VA -- This kind of heat can be dangerous for people exercising outdoors.

"It's pretty hot out in the sun," said Jason Bookheimer, a runner.

Running for a lot of people in Danville is more than a work out - it's a way of life. And runners like Adam Jones don't want to slow down just because the temperature rises.

"You always use caution like anything else," said Jones.

But not every one is so careful. Brian Wilson with the Danville Life Saving crew says they've responded to 25 heat-related emergencies in the past year.

"It could be very dangerous. People need to pay very close attention," said Wilson.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

"The big thing is fluids. Make sure you have plenty of fluid intake before you get out...I don't think you could drink too much water," said Wilson.

If you work outside, from the yard to your 9 to 5 job, try to stick to the coolest parts of the day, and stay in the shade. Also, know when to stop.

"If you feel like it is hard to breathe that is time to stop and let your body relax. Chest pain, if you have any kind of chest pain while you are exercising stop immediately," said Wilson.
It's good advice to know now to get through the rest of the summer.

Another tip is wear light, breathable clothing. It can make a big difference in your body temperature.
