Martinsville, VA - A 19-year-old Martinsville man is now in custody charged with killing his mother and stepfather. Investigators have identified the two killed as Kathy Fain, 49, and Charles Darryl Fain, 52.
Autopsies were conducted Thursday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia. Preliminary results from the autopsies revealed that Kathy Fain died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Charles Fain died from multiple gunshot wounds.
As you can imagine, those close to the family are devastated. Investigators say Zachary Bailey lived at the house with his mom and stepfather. Authorities say that the Fains lived routine lives and when all three of them missed several appointments those close to them became worried.
"Shock. Total shock," said Susan Alley, a friend of the family.
A reaction felt among an entire community.
"I hate it. I really do. I liked the people you know. They were always quiet, there were no problems out of them or anything. I just really hated for the family," said Jim Parrish, a neighbor.
Close friends stopped by the Beaver Road house, remembering their loved ones and gathering valuables for a grieving family.
"Except for the blood stains. It looked normal," said Alley.
Susan Alley remembers her friendship with the Fains for over a decade. She says they loved to ski, camp and go to church.
"They would mow the yard, they would do anything for you, give you the shirt right off their back," said Alley.
Alley says the most shocking part is the potential role Bailey played. He now faces two counts of second degree murder and multiple gun charges.
"He seemed to be like a good kid. This was a good family, good family," said Alley.
Sheriff Lane Perry believes the death happened earlier in the week. And will not comment on a motive or the cause of death, only saying blood and bruising were found with the victims.
"We have a time frame window that we think extends from Sunday afternoon from sometime maybe Monday morning," said Perry.
Bailey is being held at the Henry County Jail without bond. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office is still working to get any information they can.
They are asking anyone who has had contact with Kathy or Darryl Fain in the past week to please contact the Henry County Sheriff's Office at (276) 638-8751 or the Crimestoppers Program at 63-CRIME (632-7463). The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $1000.00 for information related to crime. The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.
