Commonwealth Games Begin Friday

Athletes from across the state are converging on the Roanoke Valley this weekend for the 23rd annual Subway Commonwealth Games.
Thursday night Virginia Amateur Sports thanked the sponsors, volunteers and friends who keep the Games pushing forward.

190 thousand athletes have competed in the Commonwealth Games in the first 22 years.  And an added treat this year, some Redskins players and cheerleaders will join the Athlete Tailgate Party Friday afternoon around 5.

The guest speaker for Friday night's Opening Ceremonies is Greensboro native and Olympic Gold Medal speed skater Joey Cheek.

You can hear more from the gold medalist at Friday night's Opening Ceremonies starting around 7:15 at the Roanoke Civic Center.
