Commonwealth Games Prepare for Opening Ceremony

Roanoke, VA - Everything is just about in place for Friday's opening ceremony for the 23rd Annual Commonwealth Games.

Some 9,000 athletes, and their families, are expected to make their way to the Star City this weekend, which is the central hub the events.

Teams began showing up early Friday to get signed in while crews inside the Civic Center were busy setting the stage for the opening ceremony.

"For me, today is the big day. Once I finish with today it's kind of downhill for me but for everybody else the madness is just starting," said volunteer Charity Waldron.

The Games' annual tailgate party will get underway at 5 p.m., and will be highlighted with an appearance by the Washington Redskins "Thank You Tour".

The opening ceremony itself begins at 7 p.m.
