Halifax County, VA -- The 32nd annual Virginia Cantaloupe Festival is on Friday. And while the weather may not be ideal, the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce hopes it will still draw crowds. Since organizers schedule the festival in July, they know to expect heat.
But they have 2,000 tickets, so they hope every one of those will be sold. Because that means big profits for the Chamber. They find that a chunk of their ticket sales do not happen until the day of, because people wait to see the weather.
So, they have ways to combat the heat, including having a misting tent and plenty of water. They also say that these showers will hopefully cool down the rest of the night.
"We are trying to have enough non-heat related interesting things to do to draw them out to offset that. There is no way around the summer heat in Southern Virginia. It's pretty hot," said Jason Kirkhart, Facilities Chair for Festival.
The start time has been pushed back to 6:00 p.m. because of the storms that have pushed through.
