Halifax County, VA -- Folks are already filling up the Halifax County Fairgrounds for the 32nd annual Virginia Cantaloupe Festival. They started with 2,000 tickets, and are hoping they will sell out.

The Halifax County Chamber of Commerce has been working for 4 months to get ready.

From the farm to the festival, the cantaloupes are cut and read to go.

"A big part of the cantaloupe festival is celebrating the cantaloupe itself," said Jason Kirkhart, Facilities Chair for Festival.

But before crowds arrive, crews spent hours on set-up starting at 8 Friday morning, working on everything from the stage to the snacks.

"We have about 600 pounds of BBQ, about 10 thousand chicken wings, and there is about 250 pounds of potato chips that are cooked fresh," said Charles Thompson, Owner of Four Oakes Restaurant.

It's his fourth year at the festival, and Charles Thompson has perfected the prep work, even finding unique ways to boil the 2 thousand cobs of corn.

"We were actually cleaning a frier and why not use this frier since it's boiling so we started putting water in them and boiling it," said Thompson.

At the other end of the fairground, they're setting the stage for two bands. They've got to check the sound and make sure all the equipment is ready.

"A lot of people come for the party. Just to enjoy the music, enjoy all you can drink, all you can eat. It's an all inclusive ticket, you can't beat that," said Kirkhart.

"We know it's going to be a big party," said Patrick Capozzoli, Beer Guy.

And all of this work is worth it, the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce hopes to bring in 20 thousand dollars.

"It gets the community together. It's something the chamber does a really good job of preparing for and promoting. Get the community together and see some of the things that we offer," said Thompson.

You can buy tickets at the door.
